Why is Twilight so ridiculously popular?

Question

I'm wondering if the popularity of Twilight coincides with the ending of the Harry Potter series? There are millions of young teens who no longer have the next Potter book to look forward to, and so out comes a new dramatic (and romantic, for the aging audience) book and movie series. The actors and characters start out a little older, and again, this seems to coincide with what I was just saying.

So....maybe not all of the popularity of Twilight can be lent to this theory, but I'm wondering if anyone agrees, or has any other theory to lend to this sudden phenomena?

PLEASE READ: I'm looking for responses from adults and mature individuals. If your answer is going to be "omg bcuz edward cullen iz sooo hottt" or "the movie was awsum!!!" Then please don't bother answering, as you're just looking for 2 points, aren't answering the question, and nobody wants to have to bother giving you a thumbs-down. ;)

It's exactly the same as what made harry Potter so popular. The BOOKS are that rare thing, entertainment for younger teenagers that doesn't talk down to them.



In the US most entertainment is aimed at the 6-11 year old age range. So you get a lot of things like Suite life and Hanna Montanna, and all of the heavily censored Anime like Pokemon. However after the age of 11 entertainment pretty much dries up, and by 13 there is pretty much nothing. Kids ever watch programs or read book aimed at 11 years olds, or they go onto media aimed at 18 year olds and over. A few of the smarter ones discover uncensored Anime and Manga, but that's about it.



Twilight (well, the books at least) gives both boys and girls something to entertain them that doesn't talk down to them. It has issues that are actually age appropriate.



Personally, I got into Anime and Manga for this very reason. I'm fed up with Nick/Disney/Cartoon network and their silly idea that entertainment stops at age 11.

Its ricidulously popular because the little kids that are into it are ridiculous themselves, and hop onto the newest bandwagon. Remember what happened after POTC : Dead Men's Chest came out? All of a sudden they were into pirates. I attend a comic convention every year. After that movie came out, these chicks were dressed in pirate outfits like crazy. Then a few years later after that series ends, no more pirates. Which means at this year's con, its going to be Twilight garbage all over the place. Mob mentality my dear, and the lack of intelligence to just say no.

As an older reader and viewer, it seems the intrigue of sexual tension between what someone wants but can't have is a universal draw, especially for the age group crazily excited about Twilight. It's not the writing or movie itself. It's the idea of falling in love for the first time and smitten so strongly that you're willing to give your life for this person. Top that off with the sensuality that can't transpire without dire consequence. A recipe for success.

when it comes to hollywood stuffs, there are always be young girls going obsessed with the stars ( especially male stars ) so its inevitable u see many go crazy on rob pattinson but there are also people who like it because the production in this case twilight are worthy of it and for other reasons than these shallow ones like looks although it could play a minor part. dont go judging and have a bad impression because u see people crazily liking one particular star in the movie. u will miss many gd stuffs and im not only saying twilight.

Okay then I wont do immature responses, the reason Twilight is so popular is because of the boys,and plus Twilight kinda in a sorta weird way copied Harry Potter,Twilight is a thumbs-down and its so ridiculously stupid! :)

cause the book is so nice..!!! once you read the book you cant stop yourself!!! its really nice,, romantic, suspense..uhh,,the story itself is really nice,, and the movie portrayal is also nice,,, im already now at the last chapters of eclipse,, and im looking forward in reading breaking dawn tomorrow!!...and i cant wait to see new moon(movie)..uh,,,its on 2010!!??...gosh!!!??!!!cant really wait!

I honestly don't know. I really liked it like, riiight after I watched it, but the next day it was just a regular movie to me. I don't think Robert Pattinson is hot; he's dirty. I think the only reason I even liked the movie is because, well, I didn't read the books...

Through the time people like it more and more and eventually start talking about it and their are advertisements everywhere like on TV trailers, on the computer, and just out in the open for tons of people to see.

A lot of people do think Edward Cullen/ Robert Pattinson is attractive.

A lot of people must try to compare it to their life,

or they just wish Bella was themselves.

I'm sort of neutral on this. I mean, it's a very intriguing story, and the characters - especially bella - are easily to look up to, and most female teens have little things that they pick off from her, like her clumsiness, and that she is average.



Twilight is yet another fantasy, so yeah, I can see why people seem to link it with Harry Potter. Even though Harry Potter has finished, they all do seem to snatch up the closes thing. So you never know, Twilight may have just came out in the right time.

In my opinion people love twilight because Edward Cullen is desribed as 'Perfect' and so girls jus fall in love with the character. lol ( not me though). Its also because there aren't many teenage movies which have vamire romance.People have read the book and have liked it therefore they are mad about the movie.

I think it is because the series is very popular and it has a lot of drama and romance, all the stuff that girls like. Also lots of fantasy books that are good, when they come out in movies everything is off, its not in detail like the book was and now the movie Twilight is in detail just like the book. I think that is why.

Twilight has become big for a number of reasons.



1) Teen girls like to hear love stories and Twilight love is exactly what the want to hear about forbidden love and yes, hot guys.



2) Someone reads it and tells their friend to read it who tells their friend to read it and so on.



3) It's an exciting book. It's one of those books that you WANT to keep reading no matter what you are hearing.



I have heard of many adults who could not put it down. I personally do not think the book is worth reading at a young age (-16) because of what the whole book is about.

It's popular because a lot of people like reading and seeing movies on cool things like vampires n stuff...

i haven't seen the movie yet... but i REALLY want to.....

and harry potter has been forgot about ever since twighlight came out...

it's really weird though because harry potter is a really good series....

Yes probably although there is still another Harry P movie to come out but there has'nt been one in a couple years and teens have to have something to go nuts on.I a fan because its a bit scary and it has a great cast and I enjoyed the book in the first place.I guess its just like HSM for an older audience all the kids were nuts about that when the 1st one came out and then the 2nd but the 3rd hasnt been made a big deal of.I think its just because twilight is new in my opinion it was no where near as good as harry potter.

I think you have a pretty good guess there. i am a 23 year old female who has never read any Harry Potter and i absolutly loved Twilight. Most people I know who read are all over 21. I was completly shocked when i showed up at the theater and there were nothing but little teeny boppers running around to see the movie.it kinda took away from the book because I found the more matire side of the book. I dont think the younger crowed can appreciate the darker more mature side to the book that dreww me in.

Anyway...I think I agree with you on this one. Although the older crowed was drawn in by the content of the book.

I believe that many people enjoy the series because, well yes since it's like harry potter but also because in general the people seem relatively normal. Besides that they're vampires. Same as Harry Potter, they give the main characters normal qualities and traits, this is why the books are so intriguing. Since besides the one aspect (Magic for Harry Potter, and Vampires for Twilight) the books are otherwise normal kids or people.

Hi I'm 15 and I don't think its because the Harry Potter books are over . None of my friends have read any of the Harry potter books put they're all completely obsessed with the twilight series ! I have read the books and I find them good but I wouldnt obsess over them . Its just completely ridiculous !

Idk, but it's stupid, dumb, and pointless. It's a shame that this country is full of Make-beleive crap. Twilight is DUMB! and a waste of human mind. No wonder Asia, and other countries laugh at us!
